The Incalculable Value of Living
by Erika Guedez, Community Resource Manager
In the early years of school, from ages 6 to 12, our education focused on human values. I don’t know if you remember, but basically, we were taught to identify the ethical and moral principles that guide a person’s behavior, helping us distinguish between right and wrong, in order to live in society. These included respect, honesty, responsibility, solidarity, freedom, justice, tolerance, empathy, kindness, love, and so on. I remember studying the context of each one, but I didn’t realize how important they were at my young age. The truth is that values are universal, although their importance and prioritization can vary depending on the individual, culture, and context. As a child, I used to analyze terms and delve deeper into feelings. For example, we’re taught that love is a human value, but do you love? We’re taught that life is a value, but do you live? Do you understand what I mean? It’s like the difference between hearing and listening: Hearing is a physiological and passive act of perceiving sounds, whereas listening is a voluntary and active act that requires concentration and interpretation.
Modern life, with its fast-paced rhythm, often pushes us to live on "autopilot." Watching the news, social media, TV, and artificial intelligence keeps us focused on the future or anchored in the past.
What I want you to understand is that you are important! Every person has inherent value, not because of what they achieve or possess, but simply by virtue of existing. The Bible teaches us that we are wonderfully and uniquely created by God. Recognizing the dignity of each individual transforms our interactions. Treating others with respect, love, and empathy not only enriches their lives but also our own.
We must appreciate the moments: "Big moments" are usually few and far between, but life is full of everyday moments. A conversation, a smile, a shared meal, a sunset, walking, breathing, feeling. Learning to savor these moments connects us with the fullness of the present.
God’s Word is clear about the appreciation He has for life and for us:
Psalm 139:14 - "I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well"
John 10:28 - I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand.
Philippians 1:21 - For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.
We are surrounded by people whom God has placed in our lives: our family, friends, neighbors, coworkers, and many others. They are all part of our daily lives. Make it a habit to pray for the people God puts on your mind and in your path. And it’s here that we connect with “giving thanks to God” and follow the example of those who encourage and help you in your walk with Jesus.
The value of living is not measured in years, but in the depth of our appreciation for each day, each person, and each experience. I invite you to:
1. Take a daily pause: Take time to reflect on what you value.
2. Express your appreciation: Say "I love you" and "thank you" to those around you.
3. Live with gratitude: Adopt a conscious attitude of gratitude in your daily life.
4. Start living today a life that reflects the immense value you have!
