Nurturing Language and Community

The English Club Experience at Mission Adelante

by Gissell Vazquez, Adult Ministry Director

In January 2023, a new and exciting chapter began at Mission Adelante, as the English Club was officially launched. This initiative was the brainchild of two dedicated individuals, Patti Shirley and Jennifer Barnett, who, along with a team of wonderful volunteers, took on the challenge of creating a unique and interactive space for graduates from the Latino ESL Level 5 program to continue practicing and enhancing their English skills in a relaxed and enjoyable environment. What has unfolded since then has been nothing short of remarkable. The English Club has become a hub of learning, camaraderie, and fun.

A Vision for Lifelong Learning

The primary vision behind the English Club was to provide a platform where ESL graduates could further hone their language skills beyond the classroom. While traditional ESL classes are excellent for building foundational knowledge, the English Club aimed to bridge the gap between structured learning and real-life communication. It was designed to be a place where participants could apply their knowledge in a natural, unscripted manner.

A Journey Filled with Fun and Learning

Since its inception, the English Club has proved to be a source of joy and reward for both its participants and volunteers. One of the standout contributors to the club's success has been the dynamic duo of David and Yulia. Their dedication and innovative approach have taken the group to new heights.

One memorable evening, David and Yulia arranged a special activity by bringing in a friend who happened to be a medical doctor. This evening became a memorable role-playing experience for the club members, allowing them to immerse themselves in a simulated medical situation entirely in English. This creative and engaging approach made learning a breeze and brought smiles to everyone's faces.

Another remarkable instance was when the group gathered to watch a Kansas City Chiefs game. While enjoying the excitement of the match, the English Club members simultaneously practiced English related to sports. This combination of leisure and language learning created a unique, enriching experience that illustrated how learning can be fun and enjoyable.

David and Yulia's passion and creative approach to teaching have been a driving force behind the English Club's growth and success. They have made the club an exciting, interactive, and dynamic place for ESL graduates to continue their English language journey.

A Bright Future

The English Club at Mission Adelante is an example of the power of community and education coming together. It has transformed into a vibrant, supportive, and encouraging environment for its members. The club's diverse activities and dedicated volunteers have created a space where lifelong learning is not just a concept but a way of life.

The success and growth of the English Club are evident in the enthusiasm and dedication of its participants, volunteers, and the entire Mission Adelante community. As the club continues to evolve, it is set to become an even more integral part of the lives of those who attend, providing a space where English language skills are cultivated alongside lasting friendships.

The English Club at Mission Adelante has not only fulfilled its initial vision but has exceeded expectations. With a combination of passion, creativity, and a supportive community, it has become a shining example of how language learning can be fun and rewarding. The journey has just begun, and we can't wait to see how this wonderful group continues to grow and thrive in the future
