Between Shadows and Refuge

Between Shadows and Refuge

by Yanelis Lopez, Associate Director

"The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them."  Psalm 34:7

Join us on the fascinating journey through the life of David, where the shadows of persecution intertwine with the found refuge, as expressed in Psalm 34. In a tumultuous period, David anointed as the future king, is compelled to flee from the fury of Saul. This reigning king, consumed by jealousy and fear, seeks David's life, his most loyal servant. The story reaches its climax when David, desperate to evade persecution, arrives in the Philistine city of Gath.

Imagine David facing the imminent threat and opting for an unusual and risky survival plan. To avoid recognition and protect his life, David feigns madness. He portrays himself as a mentally ill man, allowing saliva to run down his beard and marking doors in an apparently irrational act. This unconventional tactic proves to be the crucial strategy that grants him a safe passage among the Philistines.

In the midst of all of this, David writes Psalm 34. As we explore the words of the Psalm, we understand the profound context of this experience and can connect with David's emotions to his circumstances. The Psalm becomes a genuine expression of David's trust in the Lord, even when facing darkness and the need to hide among apparent enemies.

In the midst of his life being threatened, the lived promise of Psalm 34:7 emerges: "The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him and delivers them." This declaration comes to life in David's story, revealing how, even in his darkest moments, the divine presence surrounded him, offering protection and deliverance. This promise invites us to reflect on the constant presence of God in our lives, providing security and hope. By integrating this truth into our daily lives, we find comfort and certainty, trusting that the angel of the Lord is encamped around us, ready to intervene and deliver us in times of need.

Psalm 28

PSALM 28

by Yanelis Lopez, Associate Director

In a world facing countless trials and tribulations, the words of Psalm 28:6-7 offer an everlasting source of comfort and inspiration. As we navigate the complexities of these times, this ancient scripture remains a constant reminder that even amidst adversity, we can find solace in faith and trust in a higher power: Jesus!

6 Praise be to the Lord,

for he has heard my cry for mercy.

7 The Lord is my strength and my shield;

my heart trusts in him, and he helps me.

My heart leaps for joy,

and with my song I praise him.

In verse 6, " Praise be to the Lord, for he has heard my cry for mercy" we can draw parallels with the many voices raised in recent times, supplicating for mercy and relief. Humanity has gone through many stages of terror and uncertainty. This verse serves as a reminder that even when our pleas appear to echo in a vast and indifferent world, divine compassion listens.

Moving to verse 7, " The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and he helps me…" we can find encouragement to lean on faith as a source of strength and protection. In times of uncertainty and change, we are reminded that placing trust in our GOD can offer comfort. Our God is closer than ever; He is our source of hope and peace.

Psalm 28:6-7 encourages us to reflect on the enduring power of faith and the unity that arises from our shared human experience. It speaks of the profound strength that emerges from the depths of our challenges and hardships. As the world grapples with the trials of the day, these verses stand as an eternal source of hope and inspiration.
