Answering the Call to Lead

Answering the Call to Lead

by Erick Flores, Ministry Apprentice

It didn’t take me until senior year of high school to discover my passion for coaching sports. Growing up, I was heavily involved in both soccer and American football, mastering rules and tactics for each. During my junior and senior years, I played on the football team as the kicker and punter—earning the nickname “The Kicker.” I also played club soccer every year. I can’t recall a single year without playing a sport.

Joining football in high school changed my life. It instilled discipline, hard work, and resilience. It was giving me a glimpse of the true college experience. My coaches made a true impact on my life. They've played a huge role in shaping the man I am today. I’m incredibly grateful to Keith O’Neal, Alvis Coy, James Cooper, David Hughes, and the rest of the football staff for inspiring me to pursue coaching and support our community.

I began praying to God for a future coaching youth to become better players, people, and leaders. God gave me an answer. Through my partner Patrique, I connected with Josh Wikler and KCK United to learn about starting a nonprofit soccer team. A few months later, Josh offered me a coaching position for a U11 boys’ team. At 19, I achieved my dream.

With just two days’ notice, I stepped up as coach. I walked into that first training session blind, no idea who I’d be coaching or how it would go. Although I knew the game, my mind went blank at first. To my surprise, everything went smoother than expected. I grew more confident with each passing week. We recently wrapped up my first season as head coach. It wasn’t our best record, but the experience was precious. I embraced every challenge as a learning opportunity. I can’t wait to begin the next season!

It’s such an accomplishment in life knowing I achieved my dream at a young age. I love helping kids learn new skills and feel proud of themselves. Even when it’s hard, I enjoy finding ways to teach and encourage them. It feels good to watch them grow. Not just as players, but as people. I want to be the kind of coach who makes a difference in their lives, just like my coaches did for me. There is still plenty of work to do, so let’s keep persevering!
