Ad Astra per Aspera: To the Stars through Adversity

Ad Astra per Aspera: To the Stars through Adversity

by Jarrett Meek, Founder/Pastor/Executive Director

Growing up in Kansas in the 1970’s meant celebrating Kansas Day every January 29th. On those cold winter days, I remember singing “Home, Home on the Range” and learning about meadowlarks, sunflowers, Dwight D. Eisenhower, and the state motto of Kansas: Ad Astra Per Aspera (to the stars through adversity). All of those quintessential Kansas distinctives are etched in my consciousness as part of the pride I feel in being from this beautiful state. Yet, the motto, Ad Astra per Aspera, stands out with a special meaning as I reflect on 20 years of Mission Adelante.

“To the Stars through Adversity” describes both the journey of Mission Adelante as well as the journey many immigrants face today. There has been nothing easy about building and sustaining an organization that loves people from all places through harsh political seasons, pandemics, and the everyday challenges that face newcomers in our city. And yet, here we are, still serving, still sharing life, and still sharing Jesus, by the grace of God! Mission Adelante’s light shines like stars as generations of people from all places are welcomed, equipped, included, and loved in the name of Jesus. Through adversity, we have reached the stars!

This year has marked our 20th anniversary as a ministry. As part of this milestone year, we’ve introduced the SHINE campaign, with the goal of raising $700,000 to launch us into the next 20 years. During the first phase of the campaign, which was linked to our first ever SHINE gala, we have raised $350,000, putting us at 50% of the goal. Now, with roughly six weeks remaining until year-end, we’re closer than ever to reaching the goal! Would you join us by making a special contribution through this campaign?

I invite you to watch this video and enjoy the reflections of people from every aspect of our ministry on the impact Mission Adelante has made on their own journey.
