A Wonderful Year in Citizenship Class 🇺🇸

Congratulations Geraldina!

Citizenship class at Mission Adelante had a fruitful year in 2021. Five students successfully passed the citizenship test! Now a new group of students has started discovering how this nation came to be. It is a huge challenge for all of them to learn almost 250 years of US history in less than a year of study. In addition, they have to learn it in a language that is not their primary language. It is not an easy road, but with the right company, the journey can be much smoother.

The faithful companions of these citizenship students is a wonderful group of committed volunteers. Some have been helping for years, others have come onboard more recently. All of them are doing their very best to set the students up for success. We certainly have to mention Karen Schutter who is revamping the class content by adding an ESL component to it. This really helps students to understand and practice their English. And I can not forget Delmi Lopez and Geraldina Mercado, two of our previous students who are now volunteers. These ladies all bring the experience of having gone through the whole process and they are subject matter experts!

Rockstar volunteer, Karen Schutter

I’m loving more and more this group of friends that meets weekly to practice English and get ready for their citizenship exams. If you’re looking for volunteer opportunities and want to join a group of people that value and support each other, mark our volunteer orientation on your calendar for May 21st. We would love to have you!

Geraldina and Delmy received their citizenship, and then returned to volunteer!
