Rivers in the Desert: Reflections From the 2026 CCDA Conference

Recently, I had the opportunity to travel to Richmond, Virginia, to attend this year’s CCDA Conference. The theme was “Behold,” which focused on Isaiah 43:19:

“Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.”

This scripture was meaningful to me because it reminded me that God is always at work, even when I cannot see it. As I continue growing in my role as Youth Ministry Manager at Mission Adelante, I am reminded that God is doing something new in me, in our youth, and in our community. Ministry comes with challenges, uncertainties, and seasons when it may feel like progress is slow, but this verse encourages me to trust God’s plan and remain faithful to the work He has called me to do. Just as God promises to make a way in the wilderness, I believe He can open doors, bring new opportunities, and create growth in places where it may seem impossible. This conference reminded me to keep my eyes open to what God is doing and to have faith in what He has yet to accomplish through me and the ministry.

A few of my highlights were spending meaningful time with my work colleagues, Patrique, Elaine, and Erika. Richmond is a city that was new to us all. We got to walk around the city, ride very questionable Ubers, and explore airports together. I had a chance to connect deeply with each of them. We also all had dinner with the Hope Center KC. It’s an annual dinner we have on every CCDA trip, and it is something I always look forward to. I had the chance to reconnect with friends while eating great Jamaican food and burning our mouths with how spicy it was.

For those who may not be familiar, the Christian Community Development Association (CCDA) is a network of Christians, churches, and organizations committed to transforming communities through the love of Jesus Christ. CCDA focuses on helping communities flourish by addressing not only spiritual needs but also social, emotional, physical, and economic needs. Its mission is to strengthen and inspire Christian community development practitioners by equipping them with resources, training, and relationships that encourage meaningful change. CCDA believes that God desires to restore relationships and bring wholeness to individuals, families, and neighborhoods. This vision is often described through the biblical concept of shalom, which represents peace, wholeness, and the flourishing of communities.

One of the most important aspects of CCDA is its belief that effective community development begins with relationships. Lasting change happens when people are willing to invest their time, build trust, and walk alongside others through both challenges and successes. Churches and Christian organizations have an important role in this process because they can demonstrate Christ’s love through practical service, discipleship, leadership development, and community involvement. Instead of viewing people as problems to solve, CCDA encourages Christians to recognize each person’s dignity, potential, and ability to contribute. This approach promotes unity, strengthens relationships, and helps communities become places where people can thrive together.
